Anne Stokes
Hello, I'm Anne
I am a Registered Practitioner with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I first began counselling in the mid 80s when I was a teacher in secondary education, and obtained my Diploma in Counselling at Reading University. In 1992 I received an MSc in Counselling Supervision and Training.
I have a private practice in Hampshire and also work throughout the country in companies and voluntary organisations both as a counsellor and a trainer. For a number of years I was closely involved with the Association for Counselling at Work.
My approach to counselling is that I want to help you to find a resolution to your issue that suits you, your values and your way of life. Sadly I have no magic answers, but try to help you to unravel the strands and find ways of living life effectively. Sometimes this can happen very quickly, and sometimes, particularly if we have been masking feelings or an issue over the years, it can take some time. I describe myself as working integratively, which means that I will adapt how I work to suit the person I am counselling – I see this as a person-centred way of being with clients.
It's important that you are free to write about how you are feeling as well as how you are thinking and behaving, as often it's the underlying emotions that stop us from being able to move on, or react and live in the way we want. You will find that I sometimes ask ‘odd' questions like ‘What would you first notice if you woke up tomorrow and found that your issue had disappeared overnight?' This is to help us get an idea of what our goal in counselling might be.
